#69 Myopia Hunt Club - October 13, 2021

In the spring of 2021, I joined the Outpost Club. Throughout the year they have events at top clubs around the country, and this was my first opportunity to tee it up with them.

Each fall, Outpost Club hosts an event called "Release the Hounds" at Myopia Hunt Club and Essex County Club. While fall weather in New England can be hit or miss, this year it turned out to be phenomenal (you'll notice I'm wearing shorts in some of the pictures).

Myopia Hunt Club dates back to the late 1800's. It has a rich history and some amazing accolades. Some of the most interesting facts about the club include:

  • It hosted 4 US Opens from 1898-1908

  • Still today, it has the highest 4-round score ever to win a US Open at 331 (for reference, even par on a Par 72 after four rounds would be 288)

  • When it hosted the 1901 US Open, no player was able to break 80 in any of the rounds

After playing, I can certainly understand why the course racked up some high numbers in these tournaments. Despite being only about 6600 yards, it features several long holes and greens that are relatively small and sloped. In addition, errant shots can be severely punished by the fescue lining the course.

Despite it being October in New England, it was quite warm!

One of my favorite holes was the short par 3 9th. While measuring only about 130-140 yards depending on the flag and pin placement, precision is required. The green is narrow and trouble abounds -- sand left and right as well as fescue if you miss short.

Ultimately, I ended up shooting a 93. Obviously wish I could've played a bit better, but still had a great time and enjoyed my first Outpost Club round. It's truly great when you get to golf with others who appreciate and enjoy the game!
